Insect Bites And Repellents

Email This Article IM This Article Print This Article
Your veterinarian should be consulted to ascertain that insect bites are causing the itch. If this is the case, he or she may have suggestions as to the most appropriate insect repellent and/or insecticide to use to eliminate this problem. Be sure to read and follow directions on the label for such products. The itching might be caused by an allergy. The most common allergy is flea allergy. Dogs and cats may become allergic to the saliva of fleas. As a result, each flea bite causes intense itching, redness of the skin and small red bumps. Just a few bites on a highly allergic animal may cause a severe reaction. The problem is much worse in the summer and autumn in areas where the winters are cold. In warm climates, it is a year-round problem. Plants, pollen and sometimes even food, along with insects, are among the allergens which may induce intense itching. Treatment depends upon your working with your veterinarian to identify and remove the allergen. If you would like more information about allergies in pets, please visit our Library.
