Juvenile Period

The juvenile period is the longest developmental period and lasts from week 10 through month 12. An average kitten’s development during this period will look like this:

Months 3-7 In the first part of this period, deciduous incisors fall out as permanent ones grow in. Final eye color develops. The initial rabies vaccination is essential and should be given sometime between 3-4 months depending on state regulations. At that time establish a vaccination schedule with your veterinarian. At approximately 6 months of age, female kittens may experience their first breeding season. Check with your veterinarian about spaying your pet to avoid unwanted kittens.

Months 8-12 Male kittens will sexually mature and be able to sire babies. Consult your veterinarian about neutering your male kitten. Both sexes will continue to fill out and gain weight. Coats on longhaired breeds like Maine Coon and Persian cats may not fully develop until 15 – 18 months.
