How to Make Your Cat Happy in 5 Simple Steps

Posted Fri, May 18, 2007, 10:00 am PDT

1. Do your homework. The decision to get a cat may have been unplanned and emotional, but the care of that cat can’t be impulsive. Talk to your veterinarian, read books by qualified experts, and learn about this family member. Start off by being properly informed about what cats need, and you’ll see your relationship blossom as your kitty grows into a well-socialized, well-behaved feline.

2. Start out with the right equipment. There are so many litter boxes, litters, scratching posts, toys, and beds -- and the list goes on. How do you know what your cat needs? Resist the urge to buy a product based on its human appeal. Think like a cat and look at a product from your cat’s point of view. For example, a covered litter box is designed to hide the sight and odor of its contents from us. Unfortunately, the cover also traps the odor in the box, making it unpleasant for the cat. An uncovered box that’s the right size for your cat would be in line with what Fluffy would choose if she had control of your wallet. Use that same think like a cat view when deciding on other products. Is that scratching post appealing to you because it’s small and easily hidden in a corner? If so, that decision may cost you some damage to your furniture, because Fluffy would prefer something tall and sturdy.

3. Make your home cat-safe. This is crucial when a cat comes into the home. Dangling electrical cords are enticing to a playful cat, so you should firmly secure all wires. Plants pose another danger, and almost all houseplants are toxic to cats. Remove plants that are harmful, or use a bitter anti-chew spray made especially for plants (found in pet supply stores.) A dangling window-blind cord is another potential hazard. Cats also love to crawl into tight hiding places, and that could mean trouble if you close a closet door or dresser drawer and kitty is stuck in there. You’ll find lots of helpful products in the baby safety section of your local home improvement store. Many of these products will help the new cat owner as well. Cats can get into things you’d never suspect they were capable of, so safety is of the utmost importance.

4. Make your home cat-friendly. It may be hard for a cat to resist scaling the curtains or prancing across the top of the bookcase. Cats love to climb, leap, pounce, and balance. This is normal cat behavior, so don’t reprimand your cat for doing what comes naturally. Instead, provide acceptable outlets for that behavior by providing cat trees, perches, and scratching posts in order to make your environment cat-friendly. Provide areas for safe exploration, cozy naps, climbing, jumping, playing, and just plain fun!

5. Remember -- your cat is not a dog. I know it may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many times I see cats eating dog food or being bathed in dog shampoo. Use food and other products that are specifically designed for cats. Many products that are safe for dogs are not safe for a cat’s sensitive skin. When it comes to food, cats require more fat and protein, so if Fluffy eats Fido’s food, she won’t be getting enough of the nutrients she needs.

Kittens need to be 'humanized'. Talk to them, pet them, play with them from the time they are born. Never punish it for some act after it has occurred.

Talk to your cat. Baby talk is fine, but I carry on "conversations" with mine and they respond really well -- they "talk" back to me and have learned several words (including "NO"). Cats are very intelligent, and if you respect that and treat them appropriately, they will reward you. I had one bluepoint Siamese for 18 years who was my best friend, and we carried on regular "conversations". Cats will learn your moods -- my Siamese knew when I was upset and would cuddle with me and pat my face. A close relationship with a cat can be very fulfilling. :)

My recently SPCA adopted cat is a Turkish Van. I did not know how much they like water until my little fellow jumped into the bathtub with me! You can imagine my surprise! Now we regularly give him a once a week shower or bath and he loves it!

if you can, adopt at least two kitties. they have a playmate and won't get into as much trouble when you're gone.

Most of all, don't feed your dog or cat commercial pet food. There are alot of good recipes out there and my cat's health has improved in an amazing way because I got rid of commercial cat food. Read Dr. Pitcairn's Guide to Natural pet health, it's a great book with easy recipes. Your Vet bills will go way down as well. I make a large batch once a month and freeze it in small containers and it costs half the cost of commercial food.

I have two cats. One is overweight and is a bully over the food. The other only eats in small amounts. Any suggestions on how to help my fat cat lose weight. They are both indoor cats.

Answer to growens03: I have the same problem with my cats. I feed the overweight cat a lite cat food and the other regular food in different rooms. I don't leave food out all day but I do feed them both small amounts morning, late afternoon and before bed. The overweight cat has lost 5 lbs. (he was hugh) and my other cat has picked up a feww pounds. My method is a bit more trouble, but both cats are happier and healthier.

You should mention having your home free of the feline distemper virus (which it probably isn't if you have outdoor animals) and making sure your kitten has been vaccinated 3-4 times. Also, keep new cat away from other cats until all shots have been received (usually after 3 months). I lost 2 kittens to the virus.

I got my cat from a local shelter..I was planning on getting a cat, went to meet some, and when they brought mine in she started purring and rubbing against me. My cat has become a wonderful companion and was particularly comforting and sweet when my dad passed away. She's about 3 and a half now and I'm looking forward to many years of her companionship.

In regards to "ezavila14's" post he does not even deserve the effort that would be wasted to respond to his post as thats why he did it. Responding back like patricia m only serves to lower you to his level. Animals deserve to be treated to the same respect as humans do.

I can't wait to get two more kitties. This time I will get them from a credible place. My last two died of feline leukemia. I spent $300 trying to save them, but nothing worked.

I adopted a beautiful cat a few months ago, her name is Orange. We were happy at first but then she was so mad at me because I had to work all day and she was lonely at home. One day she escaped and went back to her original home. I realized it was not meant to be. She is such a beautiful cat! So, yes, getting a cat should be something you have really thought about, and you need to be ready for it. Orange lives in her original home with other four cats and the owners love her deeply.

I reported his entry as abusive. The article said cats don't like litter boxes with covers. I have 2 cats and 3 litter boxes. One is open and 2 have covers. They use all three. Sometimes I think they like a little privacy, just like everyone else!

Ok I really didn't want to respond to Ezavila 14's comments but I just had to say that whoever you are, you are an ass. You deserve to be shot in the head and hung up by your balls and you need to go seek serious mental help. Now my comment to the serious people, I have a wonderful cat and she is my best buddy. I have had her 5 years and I wouldn't trade her for the world.

Actually, ezavila14 is a liar. That should be obvious to everyone. He doesnt own a rifle at all and never shot anything. It just helps his self image to think he could do something violent, when in reality he most likely is the victim of alot of social abuse at school. But you all are right, this little boy obviously needs professional help.
