My cats run in cycles. One visits every 2 hours or so during the night. They forgot to mention the 5th part of the cycle.....petting time. And my guys line up starting at 11 pm. until 4am each night
I'm lucky as my cat has never woken me up in the middle of the night! I guess I've been doing it right even though I didn't know I was This does however explain why she tends to start bouncing off of the walls right before I go to bed and then calms down shortly after for grooming and then passes out.
Grace, you might also try closing her out of the bedroom when she starts up. No big production, just get up and walk to the door, she'll probably run out ahead of you and be confused when the door closes behind her. After several nights of this mine realized what was up and left me alone. They'd get up and go downstairs to play instead of running back and forth across the bed or trying to wake me.
Interesting... I hadn't realized that so many of us are living with kitties who want to play in the middle of the night. Kitty has a mind of her own, so attempting to play is usually met with indifference. She starts her own games with me when she's in the mood. I've noticed that she's more active and vocal in the wee hours when the moon's near or just past full. I've gotten to the point where it doesn't fully wake me--I ignore her and she usually leaves the room or settles down. She doesn't like her sleep time disturbed and I respect that as much as I can, so I'm hoping it's reciprocated most of the time.
Holy crap. Have a couple of kids and you wont have time to entertain your cat in the evening. Find an area where your kitty can sleep at night close to food and a litter-box, shut the door. Good night. And yes, I AM a cat person. I have had about 12 cats collectively over my lifetime.
My cat and I go to bed at the same time. He sleeps all night with me, only waking up when he needs to use the litterbox. Thanks for the info though. I will keep it in mind if I ever get another cat.
Sorry tried ths and every thing else they do not work....Yes they do have a mind of their own...I have 2 cats which are 15 years old and 1 of them will start to chat at around 4 in the am, and the other 1 will bob you with her head every time she hears you move...So no sleep for the me
my cats have always been pretty good about bed time. heck they know when its bed time before i even do! i guess they do their playing in the day time before i get home.
I have two cats, and sleeping has never been a problem. Everyone should be sleeping with their bedroom doors shut, anyway. Burglars are less likely to open closed doors if they break in at night, and if there is a fire in your home, you are more likely to survive if the door is closed. (I'd still go back in for my cats, though!)
PURRR-fect timing. My son told me he did not get any sleep last night due to visits from Dexter, his 6 month old kitten. Dex must have been in rare form last night as our Labrador, usually Dex's best buddy and protector growled at him last night. We will try this and see if it helps.
2 of my kitties sleep on my bed. 1 at my feet and one cuddled right up to me (she is 19 and needs extra tlc) My other 2 spend the entire night up and down the stairs, and especially downstairs finding whatever they can to knock onto the wood floors to make a lovely crash in the middle of the night. I have gotten used to it pretty much. It is when they cry at night wandering the hall that I have to get up and see what is going on.
Let's see, exercise makes cats sleepy. Shock. Not that that works with people at all.
Eating a big meal makes cats sleepy. Again, shock. Nobody who's ever eating Thanksgiving dinner doesn't know this.
I guess she threw in the grooming part to make it sound like she was saying something cat-specific and something we didn't already know.
And my problem is the same as Rebecca S's - they are fine during the night, but then if I am not up when I'm "supposed" to be, they take it upon themselves to make sure I am.
i guess im one of the lucky ones...my cat pooty curves up around my head and sleeps with me and my husband every night...i love to hear her purring in my ear as i drift off to sleep...
Our cat loves to sleep all day, so he is up all night. So we he would always wake up my hubby, so we took our dog's large open folded down cage and fixed it up for our cat to sleep in at nights. We have a litter box inside it in the back end, blankets to sleep on and a few of his toys. He roams all day and then at night he will now eat, drink, groom and then he will let me know he wants to go to bed by sitting in front of the door waiting for me to bring his night treats and put him in the cage. He sleeps all night now and we have been doing this since he was little and hubby can sleep sound too. As for the article, it is a good one, but find the cage at nights is better for all, and he roams all day in the house.
wow.. i didn't know this was such a common problem.. it'll help lots.. i always thought i'd have to wait out her kitty period before enjoying a good night's rest.. what's unfair is, she leaves my husband alone and plays, nay, attacks me instead... i hope it works cuz i can't leave toys out for her, the dogs will destroy anything not made of rope..
I need to try this on my girlfriend's cats. The male cat does that all the time. The female cat is more polite and higher class (if there is such a thing). LOL !
Our cat would always stomp all over us at night until we found a perfect solution: A cat tree next to our bed with plenty of baby blankets on it for her to snuggle in. It works like a charm and our cat doesn't come into our bed and bother us AT ALL anymore!
My Boo is a inside/outside Queen (oops I mean kitty cat). The only problem we have is around 4am she wants to go out and go potty. As the Cat Box is used only if there is no other way in the world for her to get out. Strange indeed. lol But going to try the "play with her" before I go to sleep tonight and see if we might have a whole nights sleep again. Mahalo for the info!
Well my cat wakes me up when he wants to get out of the room...so the best thing I can do is leave the door slightly open so when he needs to go out, he can open the door himself.
