I agree with the fact that a cat needs to set the pace regarding visitors. I have relatives that think my female cat doesn't like them because she runs when they try to approach her. A cat is a cat and they're going to do things their own way and in their own time. Gotta love 'em!

If they didn't do that, they would be dogs! That's the fun and mystery of a cat.

I had these really horrible people over for dinner one time, and my cats who are normally sociable with everybody, avoided these individuals like the plague, the entire evening.

When I meet a cat in some one's else's home, I let my hands down for him to sniff.(as you would do with a dog). Then the cat is comfortable with me most of the time. Try it.

I agree with Lyly, I always let a cat sniff me before I initiate any other contact. I still do this with my own cat!

My 6 year old female has been known to invite a guest she deems 'unwanted' to the door. She would stand in front of the person, vocalize with a tone I've grown to know well, then walk to the door. She repeats this until there's no doubt regarding her message. When the person leaves the house, she jumps in the window to watch them leave the property. After two embarrassing incidents of this nature, I put her in the bedroom when I'm expecting company. Though I admit, the first time, she did me a huge favor.

None of this applies to ragdolls. They love everyone. Might as well be dogs that use the litterbox.

My mother had a cat-hating friend whose husband would come in while she sat outside in the car to avoid our kitty. One time, after a short visit with her husband, we stepped outside to say hello to her. There she was, screaming hysterically inside the car, while our cat looked at her quizzically from atop the windshield.

What causes a cat to run farther inside the house every time the outside door is opened? I can't help but wonder why my cat will not come into the room when my one table of bridge is here, but will come out when my 9 person Book Club is here.

I too have a Ragdoll, just like J. She's now 16 years old and shies away from noisy small children but will eventually come out. She's always been wary of strangers and would run and hide when she heard the front door. But the very first time my husband came to visit when we were dating, she ran right over to him just as he stepped in the door and rubbed up against him and purred. She chose him for me. :)

My Russian Blue is the same way; as long as visitors leave her alone while they're there, she'll eventually come from under the bed in the guest room and say hi, in her own time. My Calico greets everyone at the door and makes friends immediately!

My cat does not like anyone who does not live at my house and only tolerates the ones who do. He is not a lap cat and only takes so much scratching behind the ears. He only likes one kind of cat food and if he gets anything else it will set until it turns green. My other cat is the total opposite.

    17. Butch B. - 3.16PM on 08/04/07 We've had 5 cats over a 35 yr. span. Our first one was a lap cat but only to us & wasn't bothered by strangers. Our second one was so very trusting you do anything with her & she just sat there when strangers came to do door. Our third one was very friendly and loved to rub on their legs or sit at/or on their feet. Our two we have now are completely opposite of each other. The younger one (3wks. younger) is very nosy and wants rubs and flops down so the visitor can rub her tummy and also is a lap cat. The older one does not like strangers & hides under the bed till they are gone but both love to sit on our lazy boys with us or our laps. We love them to pieces.

My cat loves my friends, but as soon as we get into a conversation and ignore him, he jumps on top of the refrigerator and starts eating my plants. He knows that immediately gets my attention and I will call for him to get down and stop. He has done this enough for all of us to know we have to include him in on our conversation with talking to him every now and then. As long as we do this, he is a good boy. Once again, he has taught me a knew trick.

My cat likes some people but not others, and doesn't seem to pick them out based on who likes or dislikes cats. If he doesn't like a guest he will come out and hiss and growl and threaten to slap the person, my mother-in-law is terrified of him because he doesn't like her. But if he likes a guest he will greet that person then go on about his business. He much prefers to be out and about if there is someone he doesn't like, he loves to show how fierce and mean he can be!

I have a 6 month old kitten, she is always playfully trying to bite us by us I mean in the household: which consists of my wife, my daughter and daily visitor mother in law who also is nice and plays with the kitten. What does this constant playful biting indicate. she'll climb on the dinner table and the ironing board and we will find her sleeping there taking her naps. She has her own bed on the floor. She is into jumping on the furniture and uses this furniture as a scratching post. She does seem to like little children they seem to annoy her. Do any of you out there have any suggestions. We have tried to clip her nails down a bit but they seem to grow back rather quickly. She just seems to be a very playful kitten. We give this kitten freedom to roam the living room , the dining room and the kitchen and bathroom. She is just not allowed in the bedrooms. Again any suggestions on the playful biting or constant scratching our legs and arms are constant targets for scratching through her playful moods. Thank you in advance for your helping in this matter.

My cat can go nuts around people she doesn't know. I normally put her in the bathroom for a bit if she doesn't like the guest at least till they have left.

this article makes no sense to me, I have two cats and they seem to be able to sense and avoid people that don't like cats. Cats are not dogs which like people that even cause them physical pain. Rethink your arguement and pay attention to your cats!

My son's best friend won't come over to play because of my cat, even though he likes cats. The boy is allergic, and his mom says she'd give him his Zantac before he came over, but he just hasn't come over yet. Another friend always wears green when she comes over, and my cat can't seem to get enough of her, but if she comes over and doesn't have on her green scrubs, my cat ignores her. Funny, huh?

I used to have a lot of pet cats when I was a child; however, when I moved, I developed a rather strong allergy to cats. I was upset at first; but now, i don't mind that much. I noticed that when I am at my friend's house that her cat loves me. I open the door, everyone hears a jingle coming down the stairs and she's (the cat) is up on top of me. It's not the first time this has happened to me- I've had stay cats follow me to my car- even after trying to scare them off. Perhaps- I am just strange. haha

My cat is the best cat in the world. cat cat cat. my cat my cat my cat. my cat is so sassy. Such a smart cat, and what an individual! My cat won't take no nonsense from nobody! I live with a hairy sly genius that craps in a box and does anything to get its ass scratched. I'd rather have a boss me around than a sexy bad boy boyfriend anyday. CATS RULE BABY!
